The two largest workers’ unions in Nigeria have halted a nationwide strike following an agreement reached with the federal government.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) initiated an indefinite strike on Tuesday due to outstanding salary arrears for workers in Imo state and the recent assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero.
In a joint statement released on X, the unions conveyed that the government had apologized and committed to investigating the incident.
“Some of the perpetrators have been arrested, and we were given high assurances that all others will be fished out and prosecuted,” the statement read.
However, the unions continue to clash with the government concerning the escalating cost of living and the surge in fuel prices resulting from the removal of the fuel subsidy.
During the two-day strike, ports in Lagos state were closed, school timetables were disrupted, and railway travel was canceled.
