Sudan’s Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), hosted Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday.
Ahmed visited Port Sudan, now the army-aligned government’s base, marking the highest-level state visit since the April 2023 war began.
The visit signifies the depth of relations between the two nations, as stated by Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council.
Ahmed’s office noted the meeting aligns with his commitment to finding sustainable solutions for Sudan’s stability amid ongoing conflict.
The visit coincides with the African Union’s efforts to resume truce talks between Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
Burhan, however, has largely ignored East African mediation attempts until now.
This meeting follows Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s hosting of Sudanese civilian and political leaders, including Burhan’s top brass, for discussions on ending the war.
Various mediation efforts, including by the US and Saudi Arabia, have repeatedly failed.
The conflict in Sudan, with a population of 48 million, has killed tens of thousands and displaced nearly 10 million. The war has devastated the country’s infrastructure and healthcare, pushing it toward famine.
