Ethiopian PM vows to humiliate nations threatening its sovereignty

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has warned that any nation threatening Ethiopia’s sovereignty will be “humiliated.” His statement comes as tensions escalate in the Horn of Africa.

The growing dispute involves Ethiopia’s maritime agreement with Somaliland, which Somalia claims undermines its territorial integrity. Additionally, relations between Ethiopia and Egypt remain strained over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile.

Speaking during a Sovereignty Day event in Addis Ababa, Abiy Ahmed reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to protecting its dignity and sovereignty. His remarks were reported by the Ethiopian News Agency.

Last month, Ethiopia accused unnamed parties of attempting to destabilize the region following Egypt’s military pact with Somalia. Egypt has offered to send troops under a new African Union-led mission, further increasing tensions.

Somalia opposes Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland, which grants Ethiopia access to a naval base in exchange for potential recognition of Somaliland’s independence. Efforts led by Turkey to mediate the conflict have seen limited success.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia and Egypt continue to disagree over the dam project, with Egypt concerned about its impact on the Nile River’s water supply.
