The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is set to launch a new web television platform to combat “disinformation campaigns” following the closure of several French media outlets in the region.
Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, the three nations forming the AES, have decided to take the initiative in creating this new communication platform.
The move comes as the AES commemorates its first anniversary.
“This web TV is part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening the credibility of the AES on the international scene,” said an official from Mali’s Department of Communication.
The launch of the new AES television station was announced by Mali President Assimi Goita during his address to the confederation.
A common communication strategy roadmap was established by the ministries of the AES member nations last month.
The decision to launch the web TV comes amidst a series of suspensions imposed on French media channels in the region.
Mali has suspended several French TV channels, including France24, RFI, and LCI, for alleged violations of media regulations.
The AES, formed by the three junta-ruled nations, has faced increasing instability due to militant groups operating in the region.
The alliance has withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which had threatened military intervention in Niger following a coup last year.
