Nigerian MP Alex Ikwechegh was captured on camera assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, after Abuwatseya delivered a package to Ikwechegh’s home in Maitama, Abuja, on Sunday.
The video, which quickly went viral, shows the lawmaker, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency (APGA), repeatedly slapping and verbally attacking Abuwatseya when he asked Ikwechegh to come outside to receive his delivery.
In the footage, a visibly agitated Ikwechegh chastised the driver, deeming it disrespectful to be asked to come out in person. The MP went as far as to make threatening remarks, claiming he could “make the driver disappear” without consequences. Tensions heightened further when Abuwatseya requested the delivery fee, leading Ikwechegh to slap him multiple times.
“Do you know who I am?” he demanded, boasting on camera that Abuwatseya couldn’t retaliate and even dared him to contact the Inspector General of Police.
Background on Recent Tribunal Ruling in Ikwechegh’s Favor
This incident follows a recent tribunal ruling in Ikwechegh’s favor, where he regained his House of Representatives seat. The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal overturned the election of Labour Party’s Emeka Nnamani over allegations of certificate forgery, instructing that Ikwechegh receive the certificate of return.
The controversy revives similar issues faced by Nnamani in 2015 regarding his academic credentials, which he attributed to record-keeping issues at the University of Port Harcourt.
