African Union calls for UN action on Israel’s UNRWA ban

The African Union Commission (AUC) has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s recent decision to ban the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

In a statement released on [Date], AUC Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat urged the UN General Assembly and Security Council to take decisive action against Israel’s move.

Mahamat warned that the implementation of this ban could severely hinder the delivery of crucial humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees, who are already facing a humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the ongoing Israeli military offensive in Gaza.

The AUC Chairperson emphasized that Israel, as a member of the UN, is obligated to respect international law and the mandate of UNRWA.

He further highlighted the principles of international humanitarian law, which require the protection of civilians and the provision of humanitarian assistance.

The Israeli decision to ban UNRWA has drawn widespread international criticism. Many countries and international organizations have expressed deep concern over the potential consequences of this move for the Palestinian refugee population.

The UN Security Council has repeatedly called for a ceasefire in Gaza, but Israel has continued its military operations.

The conflict has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis, with thousands of Palestinians killed and injured, and widespread destruction of infrastructure.

The AUC’s call for action underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for the international community to intervene to prevent further suffering and displacement.
