Landslide death toll rises to 12 in Cameroon

A devastating series of landslides has tragically claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals in western Cameroon.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 29th, when landslides engulfed a major road near the town of Dschang.

Regional Governor Augustine Awa Fonka confirmed the grim news on Saturday, stating that hopes of finding survivors have dwindled.

Despite ongoing search and rescue efforts, only 12 bodies have been recovered thus far. Dozens more remain missing.

The initial landslide triggered a secondary collapse as emergency crews worked to clear the road.

Multiple vehicles, including buses and private cars, were caught in the debris.

Cameroon’s road infrastructure has long been a cause for concern, with numerous accidents occurring annually.

The World Health Organization reported a staggering 3,000 road fatalities in the country in 2023.

This latest tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures and infrastructure development in Cameroon.
