Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hosted Libyan military leader Khalifa Haftar in Cairo on Saturday, marking their first meeting in three years.
During the meeting, Sisi emphasized Egypt’s commitment to ensuring the unity and cohesion of Libyan institutions and urged all Libyan parties to work towards a comprehensive political roadmap for holding long-overdue parliamentary and presidential elections.
Libya has been grappling with instability and conflict since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi.
The country remains deeply divided, with the UN-recognized government of Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah in Tripoli and Haftar’s rival authority in the east vying for control.
Sisi, a key backer of Haftar in the past, reiterated the need for the expulsion of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan territory.
This meeting comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilize Libya and facilitate a political solution to the conflict.
