A man who set himself on fire outside the Grand Synagogue in the Tunisian capital was killed by police on Friday evening.
According to the Interior Ministry, the man ignited himself and then advanced towards a law enforcement officer.
A second officer subsequently opened fire to protect his colleague.
Both the police officer and a passerby sustained burn injuries.
The Interior Ministry did not disclose the man’s identity or the motive behind his actions, stating only that he had unspecified psychiatric disorders.
This incident comes amid a backdrop of increasing concerns about antisemitism in Tunisia.
Previous attacks on Jewish sites include the 2023 attack on the El-Ghriba synagogue on the island of Djerba, where a national guardsman killed five people.
Tunisia has a long and complex history with its Jewish community.
While once a thriving community, it has significantly dwindled in recent decades due to emigration and security concerns.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by religious minorities in the region.
