Ethiopia, Somalia begin technical talks in Turkey to ease tensions

Top diplomats from Ethiopia and Somalia held a first round of technical talks in Turkey on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards resolving a maritime dispute that has raised tensions in the Horn of Africa.

The dispute stems from a 2024 agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, a self-declared independent state that is not recognized by the international community. Somalia considers Somaliland part of its territory and views the agreement as a violation of its sovereignty.

The maritime dispute has the potential to destabilize the Horn of Africa, a region already grappling with numerous challenges, including political instability, conflict, and climate change. A peaceful resolution of this dispute is crucial for regional stability and cooperation.

Turkey has played a crucial role in mediating the conflict, leveraging its strong ties with both countries to facilitate dialogue and promote a peaceful resolution. The successful conclusion of these talks would be a significant achievement for Turkey’s diplomatic efforts in the region.

The next round of talks is scheduled for March, and all parties involved must remain committed to finding a peaceful and sustainable solution that respects the territorial integrity of all states in the region.
