South Africa seeks new US trade deal after tariff hike

South Africa’s presidency said on Thursday that recent U.S. tariff increases highlight the need for a new trade agreement with Washington to ensure stability.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced global reciprocal tariffs on imports, imposing a 30% tariff on South African goods. Additionally, a 25% tariff on vehicles and car parts takes effect Thursday, threatening South Africa’s $2 billion auto exports to the U.S.

“The tariffs affirm the urgency to negotiate a new bilateral and mutually beneficial trade agreement with the U.S.,” the presidency said.

South Africa remains committed to strong trade ties with Washington but considers unilateral tariffs a barrier to economic growth, it added.
