Kabila back from exile, enters Congo’s rebel-held Goma

Former Congolese President Joseph Kabila has returned from self-imposed exile, arriving in the rebel-held eastern city of Goma on Friday.

Kabila’s associates and an M23 rebel official confirmed his arrival, stating he intends “to participate in peace efforts.”

The former president, who left Congo in 2023, arrives amidst escalating conflict where Rwanda-backed M23 rebels control significant territory.

Kabila’s aide stated he seeks to address the exclusion of Congolese voices in peace discussions.

The return is considered controversial, potentially heightening tensions between the rebels and the Congolese government.

President Tshisekedi previously accused Kabila of supporting the rebels, a claim he denies.

The ongoing conflict has displaced approximately seven million people and resulted in thousands of deaths.

Kabila’s presence in Goma, and possible address to residents, comes as efforts to negotiate a ceasefire continue.

Analysts warn his return could destabilize the situation.
