Macron visits Madagascar to boost ties and resolve disputes

French President Emmanuel Macron began a two-day visit to Madagascar, the first by a French leader in 20 years, focusing on strengthening economic cooperation and addressing lingering colonial-era disputes.

Macron met with President Andry Rajoelina, signing agreements in energy, agriculture, and education, including funding for a hydroelectric dam.

The visit addressed Madagascar’s claims to the Scattered Islands, French territories, and the return of King Toera’s remains, beheaded by French colonial forces.

Rajoelina announced further talks on the islands for June 30th, while Macron pledged to return three skulls taken over 125 years ago.

Macron emphasized the need for France to expand its market presence in the Indian Ocean region, particularly within the Indian Ocean Commission summit he will attend.

The summit includes Madagascar, Mauritius, Comoros, Seychelles, and Reunion (a French territory), with China, India, and the EU as observers.

Both leaders expressed a commitment to resolving their disagreements.
