Oil leak forces shutdown of major Libya pipeline near Zawiya

Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) reported an oil leak that necessitated the shutdown of a pipeline south of Zawiya city on Saturday.

Zawiya, located west of Tripoli, hosts Libya’s largest operational refinery, capable of processing 120,000 barrels daily and connected to the significant Sharara oilfield.

The NOC released an image showing leaked oil in a desert area.

Consequently, the flow of oil from the Hamada oilfields through the affected pipeline was immediately stopped, the company stated.

The NOC also indicated that a team of specialists is currently investigating the leak’s causes alongside ongoing maintenance efforts.

Furthermore, arrangements are being made to recover the spilled oil and mitigate any resulting environmental contamination.
