Angolan oil rig fire claims three lives as investigation begins

A fire on an offshore oil platform operated by Chevron’s affiliate CABGOC has claimed three lives, Angola’s oil regulator confirmed Wednesday.

Seventeen workers were injured in the blaze that erupted last week, prompting emergency evacuations to neighbouring South Africa for treatment.

Two of the injured later died in hospital, while a third body was discovered near the rig, located 96 kilometres off Angola’s coast.

Authorities are working to identify the deceased and determine the cause of the fire, as investigations into the incident continue.

The platform is part of Angola’s vital oil infrastructure, representing a sector that makes up over 90 percent of national exports.

With a population of 37 million, Angola stands as Africa’s second-largest crude oil exporter, according to World Bank data.
