Rapid spread of cholera kills dozens in 2 days in Sudan

A deadly cholera outbreak has swept through Sudan’s war-ravaged capital, Khartoum, killing at least 70 people in just two days, health officials said.

The surge in cases saw 942 new infections and 25 deaths reported on Wednesday alone, following 1,177 cases and 45 deaths the previous day.

Khartoum has been a focal point of fighting between forces loyal to General al-Burhan’s SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for two years, leaving much of the city’s health and sanitation infrastructure in ruins.

Officials say 90% of hospitals in conflict zones are out of service, crippling efforts to contain the outbreak.

The federal health ministry said Sudan has recorded 172 cholera deaths nationwide in the past week, with Khartoum accounting for the vast majority.

Despite high recovery rates in isolation centres, authorities warn that worsening environmental conditions are driving the surge. Cholera is endemic in Sudan, but outbreaks have grown more severe and frequent since fighting erupted last year.
