Fatal road accident kills 21 Nigerian athletes returning home

A devastating road accident on Saturday claimed the lives of 21 athletes returning from the National Sports Festival in Nigeria.

The victims, part of the Kano State delegation, were travelling from Ogun State when their bus veered off a bridge in Kura Local Government Area.

Authorities confirmed the vehicle, carrying 35 passengers, lost control before plunging from the bridge, leading to one of the deadliest sports-related tragedies in recent memory.

Umar Faggie, chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, said the athletes were on a government-owned bus returning home when the incident occurred.

Emergency responders rushed survivors to a local hospital, where they are receiving urgent medical care for varying degrees of injury.

The sports community and the nation at large have been left reeling, mourning young talents whose promise was cut short in an instant.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed his grief on social media, describing the deceased as “the very best of our nation, dedicated, talented, and full of promise.”

The National Sports Festival, held in Abeokuta this year, serves as Nigeria’s premier multi-sport competition, designed to promote unity and sporting excellence.

Events such as athletics, football, basketball, and volleyball draw participants from every state, embodying the spirit of national cohesion.

Saturday’s tragedy has cast a dark shadow over what was meant to be a celebration of youth, skill, and the enduring power of sport.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash and prevent such loss in the future.
