Ethiopia confirms first mpox death and monitors five active cases

Ethiopia confirmed its first death from mpox on Saturday, while five other cases remain active but stable.

The initial mpox cases appeared last week in Moyale, a border town in the Oromia region near Kenya, affecting a family of three.

Two parents and their infant tested positive after showing symptoms, sparking concern over the virus’s local spread.

No new infections or recoveries were reported in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s daily report.

Officials say none of the active cases are currently severe, but investigations continue into how the infection began.

“We are actively monitoring the situation and continuing our testing and surveillance efforts,” the ministry said in a statement.

Since the outbreak began, Ethiopia has conducted 15 tests, focusing on symptomatic individuals and close contacts.

Health authorities have ramped up surveillance in border towns and launched public awareness campaigns to curb further spread.

Despite the threat, life in Moyale and surrounding pastoral communities continues largely undisturbed, reflecting resilience amid uncertainty.

As Ethiopia strengthens its response, the nation watches closely to prevent wider transmission of this emerging health challenge.
