Suspected female bomber kills 12 at fish market in northeastern Nigeria

A suspected female suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at a crowded fish market in Borno state on Friday night, killing at least 12 people and wounding dozens more, local authorities said.

According to police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso, the attacker slipped into the market with an improvised explosive device strapped to her body and triggered it amid a crowd of civilians.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. Residents reported that the number of wounded could be as high as 30.

The attack took place in Borno, a northeastern state that has been the epicenter of a 16-year Islamist insurgency led by Boko Haram and its offshoots. The conflict has claimed thousands of lives and forced over 2 million people from their homes, aid agencies say.
