Mali reports coordinated attacks on army positions across 7 towns

Mali’s military said on Tuesday that coordinated attacks struck army positions in seven towns across the country’s central and western regions in the early hours of the day.

In a brief statement, the armed forces did not disclose casualty figures or details about the attackers. No group has claimed responsibility, but the pattern mirrors recent operations by Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al Qaeda-linked militant group active in the region.

The attacks hit Diboli—near the Senegalese border—as well as Kayes and Sandere. Other targets included Nioro du Sahel and Gogoui in the northwest, close to Mauritania, and Molodo and Niono in central Mali, the army said.

Mali, under military rule since a 2020 coup, has battled jihadist insurgencies for over a decade, along with long-running unrest involving Tuareg separatists in the north. The military has not yet responded to requests for further comment.
