Two protesters died of gunshot wounds at Eagle Nursing Home in Nairobi’s Kangemi district on Monday, the clinic’s director Aaron Shikuku said, as nationwide anti-government demonstrations marking the 35th anniversary of the Saba Saba uprising turned violent.
A Reuters reporter saw police fire live rounds to disperse crowds in Kangemi; moments later one man lay motionless on the roadway, bleeding heavily. Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga declined immediate comment on the fatalities.
Security forces have maintained a heavy presence in the capital since youth-led protests erupted in June 2024, first over tax hikes and now over corruption, police brutality and the disappearance of government critics.
