Man charged in Dundee murder of Zimbabwean-born scientist

A 20-year-old man has appeared in private at Dundee Sheriff Court charged with murdering Dr Fortune Gomo, 39, who was found fatally injured on South Road in the city’s Lochee district on Saturday.

The suspect, Kyler Rattray of Dundee, entered no plea and was remanded in custody pending further hearings.

Dr Gomo, originally from Mutare, Zimbabwe, earned a PhD in geography and environmental science from the University of Dundee in 2022 and had worked since February as a senior resource planner with Scottish Water. Colleagues described her as an “exceptional scientist.”

Family members in Zimbabwe said she was weeks away from her 40th birthday. Friends and residents have left flowers and tributes at the scene. Police Scotland said Dr Gomo’s relatives are receiving support and that inquiries are ongoing, but detectives do not believe there is a wider threat to the public.
