UN says landslides cut off South Darfur village, damage farms

Landslides destroyed about 10 homes and damaged farmland in parts of South Darfur between September 4 and 8, the UN said, with the death toll still unverified. The slides hit Tarsin village in East Jebel locality after heavy rains on August 31 saturated the steep slopes.

OCHA estimated that more than 1,000 people need urgent assistance. Satellite imagery indicates the affected zone around the mountainside settlement.

“Access to the village was extremely challenging,” OCHA noted, saying aid teams hauled relief on donkeys over waterlogged, precipitous tracks, with single deliveries taking up to 12 hours. Priority needs include food, non-food items, and essential services such as health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene.

A joint assessment-and-response mission of local and international NGOs and UN agencies has taken place, and consignments of core supplies are continuing to reach the community.
