Turkey, Egypt pledge support for Syria and pushes regional stability

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Cairo’s unwavering support for Syria’s security, stability, and sovereignty, stressing Damascus “poses no threat” to regional countries.

Speaking alongside Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara, Abdelatty expressed hope that Syria will resume an active role in Arab, Islamic, and international frameworks.

He emphasised the importance of an inclusive political process that combats terrorism and extremism while addressing the aspirations of the Syrian people.

Abdelatty described his meetings with Fidan as “fruitful consultations” covering bilateral and regional issues, highlighting shared interests in diplomacy and security.

The ministers announced plans for the second session of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council in Cairo, expected to include President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Cairo and Ankara aim to boost bilateral trade to $15 billion, reflecting “unprecedented momentum” in economic relations and mutual investment opportunities.

To mark 100 years of diplomatic ties, Egypt will gift Turkey a replica of King Amenhotep III’s statue, to be displayed prominently in Ankara.

Abdelatty also addressed Gaza, advocating a ceasefire, international stabilization forces, and rapid entry of humanitarian and medical aid as winter approaches.

He stressed Egypt’s commitment to a two-state solution, condemning Israeli violations in the West Bank and urging respect for Palestinian rights.

On Sudan, Abdelatty and Fidan highlighted the need to preserve national institutions, halt fighting, and uphold unity while rejecting any attempts at division.

The Libyan crisis was also discussed, with calls for Libyan-led solutions, simultaneous elections, and withdrawal of foreign forces to safeguard national sovereignty.

Abdelatty noted broader regional cooperation with Turkey, including initiatives in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, aiming to strengthen African interests collectively.
