Egypt and Russia held consultations Sunday on a draft UN Security Council resolution addressing developments in Gaza and proposed security arrangements. The discussion unfolded during a phone call between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, ahead of a possible Monday vote on a competing US draft.
A statement from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said the ministers also reviewed bilateral relations and regional developments, including the situations in Gaza, Sudan, and the Iranian nuclear file. Abdelatty underscored the need to advance all elements of the Gaza ceasefire plan announced at the Sharm el-Sheikh summit, describing it as a practical route toward Palestinian self-determination and statehood.
He stressed that any UN resolution must reinforce the ceasefire and cultivate conditions for a just and comprehensive peace that reflects Palestinian aspirations. The Gaza ceasefire agreement reached on 10 October took effect through Egyptian, Qatari, US, and Turkish mediation, yet Israel has continued violations and blocked progress toward the second phase focusing on security arrangements and Israeli withdrawals.
