Modi arrives in Ethiopia to deepen India’s engagement with Africa

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Addis Ababa on Tuesday for a two-day visit aimed at deepening India’s ties with Africa. The visit marks Modi’s first trip to Ethiopia, where he is scheduled to hold high-level talks and address parliament.

Ethiopia’s Government Communications Office said the visit is expected to elevate bilateral relations and advance the broader Africa–India partnership. Officials described Ethiopia as a key diplomatic hub, noting talks will focus on cooperation and amplifying the Global South’s collective voice.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed welcomed Modi, saying the visit reflects growing ties and shared ambitions between the two nations. Abiy said he anticipates substantive discussions that will further strengthen cooperation across mutually important priorities. Modi highlighted historic links between the countries, posting in a local language that Ethiopia–India relations are deep and enduring.

He said India is eager to expand cooperation and build stronger bridges with Ethiopia and the wider African continent. Ethiopia is Modi’s fifth African stop this year, following visits to Mauritius, Ghana, Namibia, and South Africa.

The tour aligns with India’s Ten Principles of India–Africa Cooperation announced by Modi during a 2018 visit to Uganda. Those principles guide collaboration in trade, technology, health, security, clean energy, and building a more democratic global order.
