UN Security Council will discuss Israel’s recognition of Somaliland

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency session to address Israel’s recognition of Somaliland. Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon confirmed the meeting, saying it will take place Monday amid rising international scrutiny.

“We will not shy away from political discussions,” Danon added, stressing Israel’s aim to act responsibly and with regional discretion.

He said Israel intends to strengthen cooperation with partners contributing to stability in the Horn of Africa region. The recognition has triggered strong backlash from countries across Africa, the Middle East, and from Türkiye and Pakistan.

Regional organisations including the African Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemned the move as a breach of Somali sovereignty. The development intensifies diplomatic tensions in the region, highlighting the delicate balance between national recognition and international norms.

UN member states are expected to debate the implications for Somalia’s territorial integrity and the wider Horn of Africa. Observers say the outcome of the Security Council session could influence broader international responses to unilateral recognition moves. The session reflects growing global concern over diplomatic precedents that may destabilize existing regional alliances and partnerships.
