Egypt signs energy cooperation deals to supply gas to Syria

Egypt and Syria have signed two memoranda of understanding to cooperate on gas supplies for power generation and petroleum needs, Egypt’s petroleum ministry said.

Under the agreements, Syria would receive gas via regasification vessels or regional transportation networks, though officials did not disclose volumes or timelines.

The deal reflects a widening regional effort to stabilise Syria’s battered energy sector after years of conflict hollowed out production capacity.

Fourteen years of civil war left much of Syria’s energy infrastructure destroyed, slashing electricity output to a fraction of national demand.

Recent months, however, have brought modest relief as gas supplies from Azerbaijan and Qatar helped lift electricity availability across parts of the country.

The Egyptian-Syrian cooperation adds another thread to a fragile energy lifeline, aimed at easing shortages that weigh heavily on daily life.

Officials offered few technical details, but the agreements signal cautious momentum in regional energy diplomacy amid shifting Middle Eastern alliances.
