Heavy rains trigger deadly landslide in eastern DRC village

At least 13 people died after a landslide struck Burutsi village in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The disaster occurred around 1 a.m. local time Tuesday in Walikale territory’s Banaulengo locality, local media reported, amid heavy overnight rainfall.

Rescuers have recovered 13 bodies from the rubble so far, including four children, while dozens may still lie buried, officials warned.

Villagers from Burutsi and nearby communities have joined the search, combing debris in a desperate hunt for the missing residents.

North Kivu has endured repeated landslides and floods during rainy seasons, leaving local communities vulnerable to sudden natural disasters.

The region’s unstable terrain and persistent rainfall have historically amplified the risk of deadly landslides in remote villages.

Authorities continue monitoring the area, urging caution while coordinating with rescue teams to prevent further casualties in the aftermath.
