At least 11 police officers were killed when militants stormed a remote post in eastern Burkina Faso over the weekend.
Security sources told AFP that several hundred fighters attacked a detachment in Balga, in the Gourma province of the East Region.
Seven officers died during the assault, and four later succumbed to their wounds as the dust settled.
The attack was claimed the same day by JNIM, an Al-Qaeda-linked armed group active across the Sahel region.
Another security source confirmed casualties and missing people, but offered no further details about the incident.
The fallen were buried at the scene under new rules banning the transfer of bodies to Ouagadougou or other cities.
Since Sunday, surviving police have withdrawn to Diapangou, leaving the outpost silent after the deadly raid.
Burkina Faso’s military junta rarely releases details of such attacks, claiming to have reconquered most of the country.
Yet violence continues to grip the nation, killing tens of thousands since 2015, according to ACLED conflict monitors.
