Deadly central Mediterranean crossing leaves about 50 dead

Around 50 migrants are feared dead after their boat sank in the central Mediterranean, underlining the dangers of the deadly migration route.

The Times of Malta reported late on Sunday that a lone survivor described hours of terror as the overcrowded vessel was overwhelmed by waves.

Malta’s armed forces said the man was rescued by a cargo ship off the coast of Tunisia on Friday and later brought to Malta.

The NGO Alarm Phone confirmed the account on X, saying the group had departed from Tunisia and spent 24 hours drifting at sea.

According to the organisation, the survivor told authorities that around 50 people did not survive the crossing.

Last week, Alarm Phone also reported about 150 people missing from at least three boats that left Tunisia, though no direct link has been confirmed.
