Kenya floods kill 62, Nairobi hardest hit

Floods in Kenya have claimed 62 lives as torrential rains continue to batter the country, officials reported Friday.

Nairobi bore the brunt of the disaster, recording 33 fatalities after days of relentless rainfall submerged homes, roads, and businesses.

Authorities confirmed that among the dead are 46 men, eight women, and eight children, as rescue teams work across affected areas.

The Eastern region has reported 17 deaths, while the Rift Valley accounts for seven, highlighting the nationwide impact of the floods.

Two people died in Nyanza, two along the coast, and one in the Central region, officials said, as assessments continue.

Government agencies and emergency responders remain on the ground, assisting displaced families and coordinating urgent rescue and relief operations.

Thousands of households have been affected, with damaged infrastructure forcing families to relocate to safer areas across multiple counties.

The Kenya Meteorological Department warned that heavy rains and flash floods could persist in early phases of the long rains season.

Authorities urged residents in low-lying neighborhoods and along riverbanks to stay vigilant and heed safety advisories issued by emergency teams.

Officials emphasized the importance of following instructions to prevent further casualties as teams continue to respond to the unfolding disaster.
