Senegal demands probe after CAF strips Africa Cup title

Senegal on Wednesday demanded an independent international investigation into corruption after CAF stripped its Africa Cup of Nations title.

The controversy erupted after Senegal players walked off the pitch during the January 18 final in Rabat over a late penalty awarded to Morocco.

Captain Sadio Mane persuaded the team to return, and Senegal ultimately scored in extra time to secure a 1-0 victory.

CAF reversed the result on Tuesday, citing regulations penalising teams that leave the field, officially awarding Morocco a 3-0 win.

Senegal’s government condemned the decision as grossly illegal and profoundly unjust, accusing CAF of seriously undermining its own credibility.

Marie Rose Khady Fatou Faye called for an independent international inquiry into suspected corruption within CAF’s governing bodies.

Senegal intends to pursue all legal avenues, including appeals to international courts and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Senegalese Football Federation asked CAF to suspend the decision and halt all trophy return procedures pending arbitration.

Morocco’s football federation defended the ruling, emphasising it upholds regulations and ensures stability for international competitions.

The FRMF said its appeal never challenged Senegal’s sporting performance but demanded compliance with existing rules.

Faye also expressed solidarity with 18 Senegalese fans detained in Morocco, who were jailed for up to a year for hooliganism.

The government pledged to monitor the situation closely and ensure a positive outcome for its citizens as soon as possible.

CAF stated its ruling followed Morocco’s appeal and reinforced the primacy of regulations over in-game disputes.

The decision deepens tensions in African football, leaving Senegal fighting both legal battles and the loss of its celebrated title.
