At least 34 people have been killed and nearly 200 injured after heavy rains triggered widespread flooding across Malawi, authorities said.
The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) said flooding has affected 23 administrative areas, impacting more than 69,000 households — roughly 310,000 people. Over 6,000 households have been displaced and are currently sheltering in 84 emergency camps.
Southern Malawi’s Chikwawa district has been hardest hit, with nearly 25,000 households affected. More than 1,800 people have been displaced into 24 shelters in the district, where nine deaths have been recorded so far.
Authorities warned the death toll could rise as assessment teams reach remote areas that remain inaccessible due to damaged infrastructure.
The government, in coordination with humanitarian partners, has launched relief operations and allocated $10 million (17 billion Malawian kwacha) to support emergency response efforts, restore basic services, and begin early recovery measures.
