
Pope Leo XIV paid tribute to priests, monks and nuns killed in Algeria civil war during landmark visit to Algeria Monday.
During the 1992–2002 civil war, 19 priests and religious were murdered including seven monks kidnapped and killed in 1996 in an unresolved case.
Pope Leo XIV said he was reminded of 19 religious martyrs in Algeria at basilica in Algiers reflecting their solidarity and sacrifice.
He said their blood was a living seed that continues bearing fruit across generations of faith and remembrance.
The pope also hailed Christian community deep roots in Algeria describing heirs of witnesses who gave lives for love of God and neighbour.
Leo visited Great Mosque of Algiers and Basilica of Our Lady of Africa overlooking Bay of Algiers before continuing itinerary.
The visit carried personal significance as Algeria was home of Saint Augustine whose legacy shapes his pontificate.
On Tuesday he will visit Annaba formerly Hippo ancient Roman city and former home of Augustine.
