Retired Ugandan journalist Joe Nam shot dead near home

A retired Ugandan journalist and author has been shot dead by a masked gunman near his home in Kampala police said Sunday.

Joe Nam, 55, worked for state media for three decades before retirement and authored a book on Museveni’s succession plans.

He was shot around 1am near his residence in Kawanda Wakiso district according to deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said.

The assailant fled the scene immediately after shooting and killing him leaving investigators searching for answers police said.

An investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing is ongoing police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said in a statement.

Nam’s book, ‘The Day Museveni Goes: Reflections, Questions, Fear and Hope’, explored succession politics and inner circles around Museveni himself.

The Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni, 81, has ruled for decades and was re-elected earlier this year amid criticism international observers.

During his career, Nam covered politics, business and environment, often criticising Uganda’s governance and human rights record in reports published.
