Ugandan and Congolese forces have freed at least 200 civilians held by militants linked to the Islamic State group during a raid in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda’s military said on Monday.
The operation targeted a camp run by the Allied Democratic Forces, a Ugandan-origin armed group active in eastern Congo that pledged allegiance to Islamic State roughly a decade ago.
The rescued civilians had been held captive by the group prior to the joint operation, according to the Ugandan military. Further details on the timing and location of the raid were not immediately disclosed.
