Republic of Congo PM resigns after Sassou Nguesso begins fifth term

Anatole Collinet Makosso has resigned along with his cabinet, the presidency said Sunday, clearing the way for a new government just days after Denis Sassou Nguesso was sworn in for a fifth term.

The presidency said the resignation was formally submitted to Nguesso, following his inauguration after winning the March 15 election.

Ministers will remain in a caretaker capacity, handling routine state business until a new cabinet is appointed, according to the statement.

Makosso, who has served as prime minister since 2021, thanked the president for his confidence during his tenure and said he remained available to serve the state if called upon.

During his swearing-in ceremony last week, Nguesso pledged to help address conflicts across Africa.
