Kenya celebrates as Sabastian Sawe returns after historic sub-2 win

Kenya staged a triumphant homecoming for marathon runner Sabastian Sawe after his record-breaking performance in London.

At Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a water cannon salute greeted the aircraft carrying the celebrated athlete.

Sawe reportedly completed the marathon in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds, a landmark achievement in long-distance running.

His time improved the previous men’s world record by 65 seconds, reshaping expectations in elite marathon competition.

“I am proud to have made a great achievement in life,” Sawe told reporters shortly after landing.

He added that he intends to continue training and “try to lower the record further” in future races.

Traditional dancers sang as he was presented with a wreath symbolising victory and national pride.

The Sports Minister Salim Mvurya hailed the performance as “a win for Kenya” during the airport reception ceremony.

Sawe then departed in a luxury government vehicle amid celebrations described as a heroic national welcome.

His parents attended the reception, saying they always believed their son was destined for extraordinary sporting success.

His mother recalled childhood moments, saying he often sprinted energetically even during routine bath time at home.

His father said he watched the race replay after missing the finish, overwhelmed with joy and pride.

Sawe was introduced to athletics by his uncle, former 800m Olympian Abraham Chepkirwok of Uganda.

He previously won the Valencia Marathon in 2024 with a time of 2:02:05 before defending his form in London.

Known for discipline and determination, Sawe said the record was not enough, signalling ambition for even faster performances ahead.
