FIFA picks Morocco to host the 2027 presidential election vote

Gianni Infantino has launched his race for 2027 FIFA presidential election, hosted in Morocco by an African ally.

The vote is expected to deliver him a third unopposed re-election since first winning the 2016 contest.

FIFA confirmed the March 18 congress will take place in Morocco, co-host of the 2030 World Cup.

The gathering brings together 211 member federations, who will vote on leadership during the FIFA Congress session.

FIFA’s growing reserves, boosted by 2026 World Cup revenues, allow significant payments to voting member federations.

Infantino, reportedly earning over six million dollars last year, maintains close ties with global political leaders.

His influence spans meetings with US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Africa’s rising role in FIFA politics is reinforced by repeated hosting of recent presidential congresses.

The 2023 election in Kigali, Rwanda, also saw Infantino re-elected by acclaim without opposition.

African federations, now numbering 54 of FIFA’s 211 members, remain decisive in leadership contests.

CAF leaders, including Patrice Motsepe, have already signalled support for Infantino’s continued presidency.

Morocco’s influence has grown, hosting FIFA offices and preparing for the 2030 World Cup.

The country will co-host the 2030 tournament with Spain and Portugal across major venues.

Fouzi Lekjaa, a key Moroccan football official, sits on FIFA’s influential governing council.

Infantino’s presidency could extend to 2031, approaching FIFA’s 12-year statutory term limit reforms.
