Kenya floods, landslides kill 18 amid heavy rains

The death toll from floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Kenya has risen to 18, police said on Sunday, as authorities warned of worsening conditions during the peak of the rainy season.

In a statement, the National Police Service said fatalities were reported across multiple regions, including Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo-Marakwet and Kiambu counties, where landslides followed days of sustained rainfall.

“The National Police Service has confirmed the loss of 18 lives as a result of these incidents, underscoring the grave danger posed by the ongoing weather conditions,” the statement said.

Kenya is currently in the middle of its March-to-May rainy season, a period that often brings intense downpours. This year’s rains have already caused significant damage to infrastructure and forced many residents from their homes.

Authorities say search and rescue efforts are ongoing in affected areas, with concerns that the toll could rise as heavy rainfall continues.
