At least 130 Nigerians in South Africa have requested repatriation following recent protests targeting foreign nationals, Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said.
The group is the first to apply under a newly launched government scheme to assist citizens wishing to return home, Odumegwu-Ojukwu said on Sunday, as concerns grow that tensions in South Africa could escalate.
Last week, demonstrators gathered in Pretoria and Johannesburg, calling for stricter measures against illegal immigration. Protesters argued that undocumented migrants were straining jobs, security and public services.
Migrant rights advocates, however, say foreign nationals are often blamed for broader economic challenges in South Africa.
Authorities in South Africa last month pledged to act against xenophobic violence after countries including Ghana reported incidents involving their citizens.
Further protests are planned for May 4 and May 8, Nigerian officials said, adding that developments are being closely monitored.
Nigeria has summoned South Africa’s High Commissioner in Abuja over the issue, while its diplomatic missions in South Africa are coordinating with local authorities to help ensure the safety of Nigerian nationals.
