DRC moves pre-World Cup football camp to Belgium over Ebola

An Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has forced the national football team to relocate its pre-World Cup training.

Team officials confirmed Wednesday that the planned three-day training camp in Kinshasa has been moved entirely to Belgium.

The highly contagious haemorrhagic fever has already caused an estimated 139 deaths across nearly 600 probable regional cases.

In response to the health crisis, the national squad has selected zero domestic-based players for the upcoming tournament roster.

This historic campaign marks only the second time the nation has qualified, following their debut in 1974 as Zaire.

The Leopards will establish their tournament base in Houston to prepare for their opening Group K match against Portugal.

Subsequent group stage fixtures will take the team to Guadalajara to face Colombia, before returning to Atlanta to play Uzbekistan.

United States travel restrictions currently ban non-citizens arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo due to the ongoing outbreak.

However, American officials confirmed the squad remains eligible to compete since their training camp was moved to European soil.

Any personnel who recently visited the affected region will undergo strict medical screening rather than facing a outright ban.
