Allies of Guinea leader Doumbouya win legislative majority vote

Political parties backing Guinea’s President Mamady Doumbouya secured a decisive majority in the country’s legislative elections, according to provisional data.

The pro-Doumbouya Generation for Modernity and Development coalition and its allies won at least 100 of the 147 available seats.

This electoral victory further tightens Doumbouya’s grip on power following his transition from coup leader to an elected president last December.

The national electoral authority reported a voter turnout of approximately 53% for the legislative races held across the country on Sunday.

Top election official Aminata Toure stated that political parties now have eight days to formally challenge these initial provincial results.

Judicial bodies will adjudicate any filed disputes before the state issues the final, official distribution of the legislative seats.

The election took place without the participation of major opposition parties, which were previously dissolved by a government decree.

The administration justified the dissolution of nearly 40 political parties by citing their failure to submit required financial statements.

Exiled opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo previously called for direct resistance against the administration after his party was banned.

The political landscape continues to shift in this bauxite-rich West African nation as the ruling coalition consolidates its legislative control.
