At least nine people have been killed and several others injured after a multi-storey building collapsed in Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos, authorities said Friday.
The building came down on Thursday while it was occupied by residents and office workers, according to state officials.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, led a rescue operation involving multiple agencies and heavy equipment as emergency crews searched through the rubble for trapped victims.
Authorities said 27 people were rescued with injuries of varying severity. Some were treated at the scene before being transferred to nearby hospitals.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered structural inspections of buildings near the collapse site and called for stricter compliance with safety regulations.
The disaster has renewed concerns over repeated building collapses in Lagos, where such incidents are often blamed on substandard construction, poor oversight and weak enforcement of building codes.
