Burkina Faso has announced it is breaking off diplomatic relations with France, according to a statement broadcast on state television on Friday.
The decision marks a further deepening of tensions with its former colonial power, amid long-standing disputes over security, sovereignty, and allegations of foreign interference.
Burkina Faso has been battling a worsening insurgency over the past decade. The violence, which began in neighbouring Mali in 2012, has increasingly spilled across borders.
Communications Minister Gilbert Ouedraogo said the conditions for maintaining relations based on mutual respect and sovereignty were no longer in place.
He said the decision took effect on June 26, following a review of diplomatic ties with Paris.
Ouedraogo also accused France of supporting what he called subversive networks and terrorist groups operating across West Africa.
France’s foreign ministry has not yet responded to the announcement. It has previously denied similar accusations made by Burkina Faso’s authorities.
