Chinese auto takes over SA Nissan plant, adding nearly 3,000 jobs

Chery has officially taken over Nissan’s manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, South Africa, accelerating its African expansion as Chinese automakers seek growth beyond an increasingly competitive domestic market.

The company plans to transform the facility into its African manufacturing, exports, research and regional operations hub while retaining all 692 employees and creating nearly 3,000 jobs.

Production is scheduled to begin in mid-2027, initially assembling the Jetour T series, Jaecoo J5 and Chery Tiggo 4, with a goal of increasing local content over time.

The acquisition gives Chery immediate access to South Africa’s established automotive supply chain and export infrastructure, reinforcing the country’s role as Africa’s leading vehicle manufacturing hub.
