At least 30 people have died and around 800 others have been infected in a cholera outbreak spreading across West Kordofan, a local Sudanese relief group said on Sunday.
Dar Hamar Emergency Room said the outbreak has been recorded since June 20 in Wad Banda and Al-Nahud localities, as well as surrounding villages across the state.
“Statistics to date show 30 deaths and 800 cholera infections across more than 25 villages,” the group said in a statement.
It appealed to humanitarian organisations and health authorities to urgently intervene, warning that affected areas need medicines, intravenous fluids and other medical supplies to contain the spread of the disease.
The warning comes after Sudan’s Health Ministry said on Tuesday that 911 cholera cases, including 127 deaths, had been reported in West and North Kordofan.
The outbreak adds to a deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan, where the war between the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces has devastated health services, displaced nearly 13 million people and left millions facing severe shortages of food, clean water and medical care.
The conflict erupted in April 2023 over plans to integrate the RSF into the SAF, but has since expanded into a nationwide war marked by mass displacement, famine risks and the collapse of basic services in many areas.
