Uganda has declared itself free of Ebola after completing the required monitoring period without detecting any new infections, Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi announced on Tuesday.
The latest outbreak, declared in mid-May, infected 20 people and resulted in two deaths, according to health authorities.
Fifteen of those infected had contracted the virus in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, the centre of a wider Ebola epidemic where more than 3,000 confirmed cases have been recorded.
Baryomunsi said health officials had maintained intensive nationwide surveillance throughout the outbreak response.
“No new Ebola cases have been detected during this period,” he said, confirming the end of the outbreak.
Uganda has experienced several Ebola outbreaks in recent decades, largely because of its proximity to regions of eastern Congo where the virus has repeatedly emerged. Health authorities frequently conduct border screening, contact tracing and community surveillance to limit the risk of cross-border transmission.
