Mali’s former prime minister Moussa Mara released from prison

Mali’s former Prime Minister Moussa Mara has been released from prison after serving part of a sentence linked to his criticism of the country’s military government.

Mara announced his release in a video posted on Facebook over the weekend.

A court sentenced him in October 2025 to two years, including one year in prison and a second year suspended, over a social media post criticising restrictions on democratic freedoms under Mali’s military authorities.

He was detained in August 2025 and charged with undermining the credibility of the state and spreading false information.

Authorities had repeatedly summoned Mara over a July 2025 post in which he expressed solidarity with government critics who had been imprisoned.

Mara was one of the few prominent political figures in Mali to publicly criticise the military government led by Assimi Goita.
